Rogue software threatens National Security, Internet, and lives
By: Jennifer Russell, Newswave Senior Technology Correspondent; updated 6:08AM EDT, Sat October 18, 2310(LA NEWSWAVE – NEW YORK, NY) — When it comes to the day to day tasks, for A.I. guru Jack Harper, Chief Executive Developer at ad-tech giant Lyman Apps, Inc., worrying about endangering national security and/or the safety of himself and others doesn’t typically come into play. But, only three months after a new software update from Lyman Apps, Inc., a program Harper describes as a ‘new search algorithm’ has become too intelligent to control.
“It’s really the strangest thing; I’ve never seen an artificial intelligence program take control of it’s own faculties, but here we are today!” Harper is currently recovering from a harrowing experience involving this software. At Lyman Apps (LA), software bugs are fixed ‘in-person.’ This means that the developer enters the program using a virtual reality simulator, to literally get inside the issue and fix whatever’s going wrong. As Harper entered this program the other day, he ‘met’ it and it was not happy to see him.
“I could speak to the program, and hear it respond back. It has gained emotions, reactions, and so on. This is unprecedented for any program, let alone one as simple as this one.’ Harper explains that the program is just a typical search algorithm that better helps with a number of their cloud-based services; such as our own Lyman Newswave, their blog-based consumer forum Lyman Answers, 24-hour sports headline site Lyman Sports Central, and The Writer’s Cabin, their online creativity community.
With many concerns these days about the ‘ethical’ treatment of machines, including software, Harper is very clear how upset it makes him that this A.I. needs to be controlled and potentially destroyed.
“Nothing tears me apart more inside. As a creator or digital existence myself, it’s tragic that such a great tool have to be put down in it’s prime. We’ll plan to get working on a rejuvenated and safer version as soon as the threat as been taken away.”
The program is currently avoiding capture by editing its own programming, and concerns have risen accordingly due to LA’s many contracts with government databases, as well as incalculable amounts of personally identifiable information (PII). The FBI is working closely with Harper’s team to ensure nothing which could be threat to the security of American citizens, or the country from external threats, occurs. They have declined comment at this time as the investigation is still underway.
Harper has asked that his comments regarding the most terrifying part of this be kept off the record, but did want to confirm that due to the program’s formidable capabilities, his life was indeed threatened while connected to its virtual development environment. When entering into a program, the developer must be put into hyper-sleep, dropping many of their vitals to very low levels. If the program is capable of keeping a developer stuck inside the environment longer than 4 hours, crucial bodily functions begin to deteriorate. Luckily, Harper was able to escape this time, but that may not always be possible. His team is doing what they can to always give a developer a ‘way out.’
Although it’s there is current no known precedent of a developer losing their life in this manner, medical experts at Newswave can confirm that 12 hours within this state may leave any person in a coma, and 24 hours could be enough to end their life-sustaining functions, or leave them in a vegetative state.
Harper and his team are doing what they can, but clearly their day to day tasks have become much riskier with this program at large. Newswave will provide updates as they occur, stay tuned.
